Special moment in sustainability

Supporting customers in a complex issue

Besides focusing on our customers, we are also mindful of the world around us. Sustainability also relates to our own business operations, which is why we aim to be fully carbon-neutral by 2025.
But that’s not all we do: we also play a facilitating and coordinating role in the supply chain. We are working with growers and buyers to create a sustainable floriculture sector, in which flowers and plants are grown and traded with respect for people and the environment.

Sustainability Management Team
The Management and the Supervisory Board decided in June to set up a Sustainability Management Team including members of the Council of Members. Sustainability Programme Manager Stefanie van Miltenburg couldn’t be happier with this decision: “The Sustainability Management Team helps us to define the way we involve our members in this important issue.”

Cooperation and certification
The establishment of a Sustainability Management Team was one of the items on the agenda for the first pilot Council of Members meeting held in August. Stefanie: “In this meeting, the necessity of crop protection in the supply chain was analysed. Members emphasised the importance of cooperation with other organisations, including Glastuinbouw Nederland (formerly LTO Glaskracht), which focuses on crop protection in the fruit and vegetable industry. Another topic of interest is the renewal of the certification, in order that we can comply with the Floriculture Environmental Programme (Milieu Programma Sierteelt/MPS): a single standard for the industry as a whole, to ensure transparency. However, the members did emphasise that the criteria for certification must also remain practicable.”

Demonstrating leadership
“No matter how rapidly the world around us may be changing and how many opportunities we might see, it ultimately revolves around just one thing: our customers,” Stefanie says. “In deciding to establish a Sustainability Management Team, we support our customers in a complex issue, both for our members and for our industry partners in the supply chain.”
